Almost everyone is aware about awesome powers of music. There are tunes that can help an individual to change his or her mood in just few seconds. But certain researchers also claim that musical tunes can influence person’s learning capabilities. Let’s take a look at some points to know more about research that links music with learning abilities.
Spotify’s study about influence of music
Britain based clinical physiologist Dr. Emma Gray believes that individuals can improve their concentration and stimulate learning with the help of music. Dr. Gray interacted with journalists during an event organized by musical streaming service provider- Spotify few months back. She shared her opinion about how musical notes can influence individual’s behavior
Dr. Emma Gray also highlighted the results for research conducted by Online College (onlinecollege.org). Their study was regarding music’s influence on learning. Its results pointed out that individuals suffering from high-anxiety scored 12 per cent more in math since they started listening to classical songs on a daily basis.
This may sound weird. But according to studies, classical tunes can actually help in solving math problems by triggering spatial temporal reasoning in left side of the brain.
Listening to songs that offer 50 to 80 beats every minute can help an individual to calm his/her mind down, and promote logical thought that in-turn helps in learning and remembering new things.
On the other hand, individual’s creative performance can be enhanced with pop and rock songs that trigger state of excitement. These types of songs can promote creativity and original thoughts that are necessary while studying art, drama or any branch of English.
Spotify funded study did attract a lot of attention, but music’s influence on behavior and learning was first highlighted by University of California’s researchers in 1993. Authors Gordon Shaw and Frances Rauscher’s study paper revealed that Mozart music can help individuals to perform tasks in a better way.
Harvard’s researchers claim that music has no influence on learning abilities of kids
Research conducted by Harvard’s researchers in 2013- 2014 made it in headlines, as their experts pointed out that music cannot improve children’s studying capabilities. The study was conducted by Samuel Mehr along with team of experts. Unfortunately, researchers failed to find any statistically significant results to prove tune’s influence on children’s cognitive abilities.
These young researchers immediately interacted with reporters after releasing their research work. They highlighted the importance of music and justified teaching musical lessons to children. But, at the same time, they stressed on the point that music might not help in improving learning abilities.
Perhaps, more research might be needed to understand the connection between musical notes and learning. But no one can deny the fact that certain songs do manage to offer peace of mind.
