Integrating Technology Applications with Character Education for Middle School Students

Integrating Technology Applications with Character Education

One of the prime objectives of education is all-round development of the child, and it includes moral development too. Rising cases of peer victimization and bullying in schools has raised questions on the moral development and environment in schools. It has been seen that imposing restrictions, rules or defining punishments will not solve these problems. The change needs to be made at a deeper level the change needs to come in the behavior, thinking and morals of the children. Middle school is considered to be the right time to provide character education to children compared to other levels. In case of primary levels, the mindset of children is still developing while in case of high school, children already have a defined way of thinking. So, bring about a change in their thinking at these ages may not yield the desired result.

In middle school, children are getting introduced to the broader aspects of life and it is the right time to change their thinking process. It is the time children use to expand their social skills and explore different areas of interest. Character development has also become an important part of education in middle school, as an effort to improve moral thinking and pro-social behavior in students. Growing dependence on technology has brought positive as well as negative effects for children. It has also broadened the scope of character development as there are unintended consequences for children belonging to the digital age too. Keeping children away from technology is not the solution as technological education is vital to keep up with the demands of the economy. You need to find ways to teach children to live consciously in the environment while improving core ethical values. Using applications, it is possible to create virtual or animated moral or social situations for children and use them for character education. Applications also provide children with tools to extend the animated situation and describe how they would react to that situation. Children can also develop their own virtual situations using applications and express their personal experiences and responses. Thus, children are not only able to develop their technology skills but also improve their moral thinking. With applications and tools for storytelling, children can interact with virtual characters and become a part of the story. Storytelling is a traditional method of engaging students and delivering. But, with storytelling apps, this experience has become more personalized, innovative and rewarding.

Right rom sketching characters to developing stories, learning from virtual situations to recording response of children in these situations, technology applications have a very important role in character building. Today, technology education is not just about teaching kids to use laptops and tablets at a young age, it is more about creating a solid foundation in the life of children. This foundation will contribute positively to the character of the children throughout their life.
